Clean eating- Meal Planning Ideas
I used to think meal planning was so much work. Why not just do it in my head on the fly? While this is a just fine method especially if you are good at improvising it can also cost a lot more money and time. I decided to give it a try because I had been hearing so much about saving money by Meal planning. The way I was doing took forever and I wasn’t going to last long with that method. I tried other ways to meal plan and found one that doesn’t take much time, feels natural, and I actually enjoy it. Meal planning is easier if it’s not just sitting down for a hour to compile a list of dishes and ingredients for the week. Well it is pretty much just that. However there are some steps that I like to take to make the process more enjoyable and less of a task. Do you ever come across a meal scrolling through social media sites or pinterest? Pin the recipe or save it in a place you will know to look right then and there. When you do sit down to meal plan it will be easier and faster to find those dishes and it wont take anytime at all. Making themed days like taco Tuesday or pizza and a movie on Fridays. You don’t need a day for everything and they don’t need to be set in stone either. I switch it up it just helps to chose from the vast amounts of recipes and it also keeps variety in your week. With that being said taco Tuesday doesn’t have to mean tacos every Tuesday. Keeping with the same category of food is a fun mix up. Fridays you could keep it Italian. So how long to plan for? If you are any thing like me planning out the whole month does not work. It does save you from having to do it every week if you don’t keep changing your mind. I find that I am wanting to change dishes and redoing my work. So I stick with planning once a week then I make my list and go to the store. Also when meal planning you want to think of ways to repurpose left overs or batch cook. Some examples for repurposing; you could make on the first night a whole chicken baked with potatoes and green beans then the next night you could turn that chicken into fajitas. Continuing on if you still have left over which I usually do the next day make a chicken sandwich or a chicken salad. See where I’m going with that and you are using the same chicken so you are saving time and money. You don’t have to cook the chicken each of these nights. Buying your chicken whole is way cheaper than buying pieces of a chicken as well. You can take this a step further and save the chicken stock and use it for soups. Freeze it in ice cube trays then keep them in freezer bags pull them out when your ready to use them. There are some many ways to batch cook the other day I made a large amount of mostocholi for dinner I put two meals worth away in the freezer and baked one that night.
If you notice I only mention dinners, the reason is because for lunches in my house we usually chose from an assortment of dinner leftovers in the fridge but you can easily apply the above tips to breakfast and lunch as well as dinners.
