All little girls love dresses, tutu’s, and the like. Make tutu’s to match everything or to surprise your little one with her very own special birthday outfit. If she is anything like my girls she will love you for it for the rest of the day ;). Tulle can be difficult to work with and very frustrating to sew. This will show you how I make my little girls tutu’s quick and easy.
First you are going to want to get:
-1 inch elastic
-a cardboard box
-a sewing machine or needle and thread
-something to stretch your elastic on while adding the tulle I use my bent knee sometimes.
Step 1: Grab the cardboard box and cut off one of the flaps, measure how long you want your tutu and cut you cardboard to that length the width doesn’t really matter.
Step 2: Wrap the tulle around the cardboard over and over until you feel you have enough pieces I usually do too little and need to repeat this step later on this is the fastest way I have found to measure and cut your tulle. cut one end being very carful not to snag the tulle as you slide the scissors in. lay this flat and be very neat with your pile it can become a big mess if not.
Step 3: Measure the waist and cut the elastic to size. Overlap the elastic about an inch then sew using a zigzag stich on your sewing machine or by hand remembering to back stich I usually make three rows of stiches to reinforce.
Step 4: Now that you have your waste band you want to pull it over what ever support piece you are using ie. your bent knee. Grab a piece of tulle gathering in the middle and folded over. Tuck the loop into the top of the elastic. Then feed the other ends through the loop that was tucked in and pull to create a knot. Repeat this step until all elastic is covered.
Step 5: At this point you have a finished tutu but it is actually inside out. Flip it right side out and you have a super cute and fun tutu.
